Werribee & Williamstown Sustainable Upgrades

Environmental heritage preservation is a guiding principle of GMCT's efforts to enhance our locations while safeguarding our environment.

Werribee Cemetery now features fully sealed internal road networks after thoughtful upgrades have been completed.

The project also entailed the addition of new car parks and enhanced drainage at the cemetery’s depot, making use of advanced non-destructive digging (NDD) methods for excavation and earthmoving. This 'green' approach successfully preserved cherished, well-established trees while construction progressed around them.

Williamstown Cemetery also benefitted with valuable drainage improvements being completed.

A highlight for the project team across both sites was sustainable:

~ inclusion of recycled materials

~ use of low-carbon concrete

~ laying of "green" asphalt with up to 30% recycled material

~ repurposing of soil and bricks

GMCT is committed to sustainably maintaining all cemeteries under our care to the highest-possible standard.

Both cemeteries serve customers in our Western region. They are integral to the fabric of the community, having been in operation since the mid-1800s.

These upgrades mean they can continue to be visited for many more years to come.
