Footscray General Cemetery is a public cemetery under the terms of the (Victorian) Cemeteries Act 1958.
On 2 May 2016, GMCT took over management and the day-to-day operations of the cemetery from Maribyrnong City Council.
The first burial in the cemetery was on 26 June 1869 and by 1939, there had been nearly 19,000 burials.
Footscray General Cemetery is currently closed to pre-need and at-need sales.
