  • Cemetery: Altona Memorial Park

The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) has informed the relevant authorities of suspected asbestos contaminated materials (ACM) found today within an unused grave at Altona Memorial Park. Whilst excavating a grave at Altona Memorial Park for an interment service, gravediggers employed by the GMCT discovered a piece of piping coated in a suspected asbestos-based material. The find was reported to management and is currently under investigation. The GMCT has quarantined the immediate zone around the area where the discovery of the suspected ACM was found and advises all visitors to remain outside of the quarantine zone located at the southern end of Wattle Lawn until the site is cleared for public access. The GMCT is working closely with families and funeral directors to find suitable options or alternatives to assist with burials scheduled within the quarantine zone. Should members of the public have any concerns or questions regarding the discovery of suspected ACM at Altona Memorial Park, the GMCT encourages all enquiries to be directed to the GMCT's Operations Manager - West on 9362 6610.
