Australian Services Union (ASU) members employed with the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) are taking Protected Industrial Action from 15 May 2013.

While the GMCT has contingency arrangements in place to minimise impacts on business operations, some disruptions to operations due to the industrial action is unavoidable.

The GMCT regrets any inconvenience to the public. During protected industrial action the health, safety and service of the public, funeral directors and our staff will be our priority.

The Industrial Action will comprise indefinite or periodic work bans at the two locations.

Advice to Funeral Directors

Disruptions are expected to affect funerals, burials and interments at both Keilor Cemetery and Preston Cemetery & Mausoleum and may affect the following business operations:

  • Sales of mausoleum crypts, concrete vaults, monumental graves, lawn graves and cremated remains sites.
  • Ordering of mausoleum inscriptions and/or plaques.
  • Handling complaints.
  • Setting up of burial equipment at grave sites, including but not limited to, mats, bars, tapes etc.
  • Issuing of invoices.

Advice to Public

Disruptions are expected to affect funerals, burials and interments at both Keilor Cemetery and Preston Cemetery and Mausoleum and may affect the following business operations:

  • Sales of mausoleum crypts, concrete vaults, monumental graves, lawn graves and cremated remains sites.
  • Ordering of mausoleum inscriptions and/or plaques.
  • Issuing of invoices.
  • Collection of money.
  • Handling complaints.
  • Maintenance of graves.
  • Washing down of monuments after burial.
  • Maintenance of selected gardens.

The GMCT has in place contingency arrangements which will reduce impacts on disruptions to our operations. The GMCT has contingencies in place to support all at-need burials
