  • Cemetery: Fawkner Memorial Park
The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) will limit public access to Fawkner Memorial Park, the venue for the private funeral of Ms Gillian Meagher. CEO of the GMCT Jacqui Briggs-Weatherill said the decision was not taken lightly, and in consultation with the Ms Meagher's family, Victorian State Government, Victoria Police, and the Department of Health. "This is the first time the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003 (Vic) has been used in such a way to restrict visitor access to the grounds of Fawkner's cemetery," Mrs Briggs-Weatherill said. "The question of allowing general access to the cemetery was raised by Victoria Police after the large response to last Sunday's march through Melbourne in memory of Mrs Meagher. "The Meagher family requested a private funeral, and the GMCT will exercise its powers to assist them as they celebrate and remember of the life of Mrs Meagher." The restriction is provided for under Section 13 of the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003 (Vic) and will be in place from midnight Thursday October 4 to 1pm Friday October 5. Members of the public wanting to leave flowers and messages of remembrance may do so at the Sydney Road gates of Fawkner Memorial Park from tomorrow (Friday). ENDS
