In September 2012 the towns of Warrandyte and Emerald were identified by the CFA as being in high bushfire risk locations and this includes the Anderson's Creek Cemetery and the Emerald Cemetery.
The GMCT recognises the responsibility we have to all stakeholders and visitors entering these cemeteries. To this end we have developed policies and guidelines for the bushfire season for Andersons Creek and Emerald Cemeteries. These guidelines are based on the recommendations of the CFA.
Code Red and Extreme Fire Days
Andersons Creek and Emerald Cemeteries will be closed to all visitors on days declared as Code Red OR Extreme. All services will be postponed until such time as conditions are declared safe.
Andersons Creek and Emerald Cemeteries will remain open, but will be subject to close monitoring throughout the day. If conditions change or if the CFA issues a 'Watch & Act' or 'Emergency Warning' the cemeteries will be immediately evacuated and closed. All services will be postponed until such time as conditions are declared safe.
Low-Moderate, High, Very High Days
The cemeteries will be open for normal operations unless weather conditions change and the risk levels increase.
The GMCT will endeavour to provide as much notice as possible before making the decision to close a cemetery, especially where such a decision results in the postponement of funeral services. Where this does occur GMCT will provide all assistance to provide alternative options where appropriate.
