  • Cemetery: Altona Memorial Park

GMCT’s first records digitisation working bee held was recently held at Altona Memorial Park.

Aided by members of GMCT’s corporate information and records team, a group of enthusiastic volunteers spent the afternoon preparing more than 1400 historical Williamstown Cemetery burial records.

The volunteers learned about caring for the sometimes fragile historical records and spent the afternoon repairing torn pages, removing pins and clips and adding separator pages. GMCT thanks members of Friends of Williamstown Cemetery who helped to make the working bee such as success.

The prepared records will now be scanned and indexed by GMCT’s corporate information and records team as part of our record digitisation program.

Following a pilot program in mid-2014, GMCT began a major project to digitise our cemetery records. Digitisation of records gives us opportunities to safeguard 'at risk' records by capturing them in an electronic format and enhances our ability to search for and locate evidence of past transactions, services and events.

Are you interested in learning about the management and preservation of historical records? There are plans to hold further working bees and engage our communities in the record digitisation process moving forward.
