Visit a Cemetery Weekend

12-13 April 2014

To coincide with World Heritage Week 2014, the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) will once again open its doors to the public for tours and behind-the-scenes glimpses of how a cemetery works.

Why not take this opportunity to visit your local cemetery - to bring flowers, wreaths or other tributes, take a quiet walk along the paths, read a book, photograph or paint scenery or study the engravings of tombstones.

All of our cemeteries will be open per normal visiting hours.  However at some sites we are also organising special community-based activities.

We also have two special themes for the Open Day.

COMMEMORATIVE POPPY TILE : (selected sites - see activities by location)

  • As part of the World War I centenary, a Commemorative Poppy Tile will be on sale at several sites.  The poppy tile has been produced by GMCT to allow families to recognise the war service of their ancestors who served in war then returned and lived out their lives in the community.  The tile ($11 inc. GST) can be affixed to headstones or plaques.  Orders can also be placed online at www.poppytile.com.au

PLANT A DAFFODIL FOR A LOVED ONE: (selected sites - see activities by location)

  • Families and friends are invited to plant a daffodil bulb in specially prepared garden beds to commemorate a loved one lost to cancer.  Daffodils are planted in April and harvested in August.  Participants will be invited to return in August to cut a daffodil and place it on the memorial of their loved one.  This opportunity is available at Lilydale, Altona and Fawkner only (although the cut daffodils can be placed anywhere).

GMCT manages 20 cemeteries in the metropolitan area.  Find out the address and further information about all our locations here. You can also find us on Facebook

ACTIVITY SHEET - Every cemetery will have an Activity Sheet at the gate to help you and your family explore the grounds and find interesting features.  Download your copy here
