GMCT is a self-funding not-for-profit organisation entrusted with caring for our 19 cemeteries and memorial parks in perpetuity.  The price of the memorial chosen by you and your family contributes to lasting care of our parks, giving peace of mind to our communities and to future generations.

GMCT was formed in 2010, following the amalgamation of eight separate cemetery trusts. Each year, we help more than 12,500 families – of all cultures and faiths – plan and prepare for funeral, cremation, interment and memorial services.

GMCT manages 21 cemeteries, including two greenfield sites. These are maintained in perpetuity (forever). Our pricing is designed to help us maintain these beautiful, restful and sustainable places to preserve and protect the history they hold.

We offer a variety of different memorialisation products and services to meet the needs of our diverse communities and GMCT’s customer care team is available to discuss options with you and your family.

How we set our prices

Our prices are based on guidelines from the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance, and the Department of Health and Human Services, which focus on full cost recovery to ensure our cemeteries are sustainable now and into the future.

The Cemeteries and Crematoria Act (2003) Vic requires that our pricing accounts for both the present-day costs of establishing, operating and managing our cemeteries and the need to provide for the maintenance of our cemeteries in perpetuity.

When we’re setting our fees, proposed prices are submitted to the Department of Health and Human Services for assessment. They are also subject to community consultation, to ensure pricing is aligned to community expectations.

Final prices are approved by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and published in the Victorian Government Gazette, as prescribed by the Act.

Providing lasting stewardship

A significant factor in GMCT’s pricing is the cost of perpetual maintenance. There is a substantial cost attached to maintaining each plot for the next 100 years and beyond, along with our gardens and cemetery surrounds.

GMCT allocates funds to a Perpetual Maintenance Reserve to ensure that all sites within GMCT’s care are maintained well into the future. These perpetual maintenance obligations are outlined in detail in the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003 (Vic.)

Comparing your options

GMCT offers a range of options at different price points. The price of the memorial chosen by you and your family will be influenced by:

  • the value of land at the chosen location
  • the cost of constructing the memorial
  • the cost of maintaining the memorial in perpetuity.

Consider the following requirements for some common memorial options:

Cremation with collection of the cremated remains – no perpetual maintenance is required and only a small administrative fee is paid in addition to the cost of cremation.

Interment of cremated remains with memorial rose – a fixed space is required within a cemetery or memorial park and there are perpetual horticultural maintenance requirements.

Lawn earth grave – a larger fixed space is required than for interment of cremated remains.  However, construction costs and perpetual maintenance requirements are limited.

Vault grave – the grave is built with a full concrete lining, resulting in significantly higher construction costs than for an earth grave.  The land size required is also larger than an earth grave.

Mausoleum crypt – significant perpetual maintenance is required to preserve above ground-interment structures in perpetuity.

Increasing land costs in metropolitan Melbourne have also shaped GMCT’s pricing structure. As a result, the right of interment cost for a plot at an inner-suburban cemetery may exceed the price of a comparable plot at an outer-suburban cemetery.

Prices for administrative services, interment and cremation services, and for memorialisation products such as plaques, urns, emblems, adornments and jewellery are consistent across all GMCT cemeteries and memorial parks.

The benefits of pre-purchasing
