Issy served in the British Army in India and after his discharge came to live in Melbourne. When World War I broke out Issy Smith, being a reservist, returned to England and joined his regiment. He was recommended for the highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross - for bringing in wounded soldiers under heavy enemy fire. He returned to take up residence in Melbourne, and died on 11th September 1940.

Issy Smith VC will be remembered at the annual VAJEX graveside service, on the 11th of September at 10.30am

This service will be followed by a tour of the Jewish Museum
