The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust supports transparency in the funeral and cremation sector between the service provider and the public. This ensures families and individuals are able make informed decisions about their own or a family member’s burial, cremation and memorial needs.

Class A Cemetery Trusts have been established under an Act of Parliament (Victoria) to provide burial and cremation services to the Victorian community. The government has invested significantly in these trusts to ensure the public have appropriate and sufficient burial, cremation and interment options to meet need. Products, services and pricing are gazetted to ensure a range of financial needs are also met. The trust also provides common graves (formerly referred to as paupers’ graves) and cremation services for those experiencing significant financial hardship.

In addition, Class A Trusts have perpetual maintenance obligations which ensure our cemeteries, which are the equivalent of a public park, are maintained for years and generations to come.

The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust has three crematoria, located in Melbourne’s north, east and west. All GMCT cremations take place in a fit for purpose environment that combines a service area or chapel and the crematoria. Families are able to hold a memorial service in a supportive and beautiful venue with landscaped gardens, and the cremation can take place almost immediately, and in the same area. This gives families invaluable peace of mind. With prior arrangement, GMCT can also facilitate requests by families or individuals who wish to witness the committal of the coffin for cremation.
