One lucky Newport resident has taken home a $50 Toys R Us voucher as the winner of GMCT’s Williamstown Cemetery heritage fountain colouring competition. The competition was part of recent celebrations to mark the christening of the restored fountain.

Four-year-old Airlie was drawn randomly as the lucky winner of the competition. Her entry is displayed below with some of the other colourful and creative entries we received.

The recent Williamstown Cemetery fountain christening was marked with a family event for all ages, designed to educate those in attendance about the rich history of the cemetery and the important role cemeteries play within our communities.

Featuring historic games, period-costumed characters and a town crier, the event delighted the younger members of our community in attendance, including classes from a local kindergarten.

GMCT community engagement and events coordinator Amanda Curtis said the event and the completion were unique ways for a cemetery trust to engage with the community.

“The fountain christening was an excellent opportunity to bring the wider community, including the very young, into our beautiful cemetery. It’s just another step towards breaking down stigmas associated with cemeteries and the smiles of children respectfully enjoying our grounds was lovely to see,” she said.

GMCT will continue its work towards building connections with our communities and ensuring lasting stewardship of our cemeteries and their heritage features as part of our 2016-2021 strategic plan.
