The day-to-day operation and management of Footscray General Cemetery has been outsourced to The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT), effective 9 May 2016.

Maribyrnong City Council Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Wall said the decision to transfer management will ensure Footscray General Cemetery continues to receive professional care and long-term maintenance.

“With the first burial in the cemetery taking place on 26 June 1869 and more than 19,000 people interred at the site, Footscray General Cemetery is significant for its cultural heritage.

“While the cemetery is ‘closed’ to the purchase of new plots, new burials will still be taking place at existing (already purchased) sites.

“As the final resting place of loved ones, it is vital to Council that the cemetery is managed by a reputable organisation.

“We are confident that The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust is best positioned to provide quality service and care to families, while also respecting the cemetery’s heritage and its physical environment” said Mr Wall.

“The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust has been looking after Melbourne’s families since 2010, providing professional and compassionate burial, cremation and memorial services to more than 12,000 families a year at cemeteries across Melbourne’s north, east and west,” said Jacqui Weatherill, CEO, The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust.

“We understand cemeteries and their often complex maintenance and day-to-day operations requirements. We are pleased to be able to extend that specialist knowledge and expertise to the Footscray community and all who visit or are interested in the cemetery’s history.

“Those with family interred in the cemetery or with future needs, can have peace of mind that we will continue to provide the level of care and attention that Maribyrnong City Council has done,” said Ms Weatherill.
