Hundreds of members of Melbourne's Christian community will gather at Melbourne cemeteries in October and November to commemorate All Souls Day.

For many  years now the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) has hosted All Souls Day masses at several cemeteries, and this year will be no different.

All Souls' Day is traditionally a time for the Christian community to remember departed family members and friends.  The masses will include hymns, music and prayers that center on the day's theme.

GMCT CEO Jacqui Briggs-Weatherill said the events were an opportunity for families to mark All Souls' Day and visit their loved ones who were resting at the same cemetery after the mass.

"This is very much a community-driven event," Ms Briggs-Weatherill said.  "Hosting these masses with local priests for local communities lets us meet a very special need for our Christian visitors and give them an opportunity to celebrate the lives of those they have lost.

We are looking forward to welcoming people and sharing this wonderful community spirit."
